The Changeling is very stylish horror tale from 1980. The film had a modest theatrical release, then it was one of the early players on VHS as early as 1982. After that, on television, more VHS (lots more), than DVD, Blu-Ray and streaming. So many releases almost makes one think this movie is in the public domain or at the very least, an Orphan Work. The investigation continues......(In the meantime, watch this very excellent Horror Movie that has inspired many writers and filmmakers.)
what did you think of "The changeling"?
NOD Review
The 1980s were a good decade for horror movies. One of the creepiest, most stylishist films of that time period was “The Changeling”. A slow burning masterpiece that has inspired writers and filmmakers for decades and probably decades to come. It is considered by many to be one of the best horror films of all time, Stephen King and Martin Scorcese have both spoken very highly of the motion picture.

As a child, I first watched this film in a Drive-In in the 80s and I remember being scared at first viewing. I have watched it many times over the years and was more impressed every time. I am glad to stil be able to give this film, 40 years later, 5 out of 5 nods for this review.
Here’s a few reasons why:
From the graphic (for 1980) opening shot to slowly crumbling ending, The Changeling is a horror movie that plays likely a richly composed sympathy of terror. It is kind of fitting that Scott’s character, John Russell is a composer.
Many of the modern reviews of this film have said the film is dull and boring. While I can see why the youtube driven audience of today’s world could see. No, one is getting kicked in the privates or heads being suddenly caught off, it is still a gripping story that has to be paid attention to be appreciated.
Which brings me to the story. Since it is a rare “Based a true story or events” horror film that actually is based on real events makes it much more enthralling to me anyway. Plus it's a very good mystery as well.
The Changeling is a very good horror film. Even if the pacing is not for you, stick with the film, watch it several times (If you can), it will resonate with you more and more over time.
